Think I'll let someone with extensive lower unit experience tackle that experiment. A man's gotta know his limitations.
If I can't find a direct replacement then I'll go to Plan B.

Thanks for the advice. Hoping to see a few options this week. Been surfacing this one for 6 years, guess I shouldn't be surprised. Only 1.83 lower I see in the manual is for 40/50 3 cyl. Lake level at historical lows, no real rain for months till yesterday, Kawartha Conservation issued Level 2 drought warning last week. Ok, I was stupid. should have pinned the carrier in addition to red locktite on bolts.
Looking for 1.62 gears, shaft, carrier etc for Merc 60/52 cu in.
Lost these and #1 prop, Grrr.

Pre OPC regulations likely explains why it looked like they were having so much fun, just a bunch of people putting on an informal show.

I'm in complete agreement with opinions expressed previously and really don't have anything to add to your experiences in the Muskoka region. I can however offer a point of view from Kawartha, Lindsay area in particular. I haven't heard of nor noticed cottage owners being denied access to their prop...
