Just put together our 70hp 49'er on a Yamarude midsection. Got the power trim wired up with relays and it all functions, but the blue/green wires from the relays, the red power wire from the start solenoid to the relays and the trim motor itself get smoking hot. We used the relays out of a 60hp mercury, they are wired basically the same as the Yamaha trim other then the connectors.

The motor seems to run slow in both directions compared to the trim in my sst60, but it sounds perfectly fine. No grinding noises, no air being moved around in the pump, nothing out of the ordinary. Does this sound like the trim motor is on its way out based on it building heat? Or does this sound more like a relay/wiring issue that's causing the heat issue?

Hook the wires from the trim unit directly to the battery and see if the motor still builds heat. Sounds like the motor is cooked but I'd still check.

Will do, that was my next course of action but got too dark outside. Looks like I'll be buying a new trim motor for it in the morning after I test the old one straight to the battery

We tested out a set of solenoids from a Merc and the trim runs a ton faster and no heat issues now. Thanks guys!
