In many of the UIM race classes including F4 and S850 they run transom mounted water pick ups instead of using the water pick ups on the motor's lower unit. A water line attaches from the pick up to the flush hole on the lower unit. The lower unit water pick ups are plugged and sealed. This allows the motor to run much higher and eliminates most of the drag caused by the lower unit. This would really help T boats running the larger lower units. Turning ability would depend on the size of the skeg. Most of the large lower units have a good sized skeg so turning may not be a problem.

i'v thought about this..

on a v-bottom you would have to mount it as close to the pad as possible without creating turbulence in front of the motor,at the same time keep it close enough so it doesn't come out of the water when turning. i don't think they really work on our applications..

i would try a pad mount water pickup 6" or so forward from the transom.maybe off center.. question is who is going to let me drill a 1" hole in their pad to test my theory? :mrgreen: :|

Many different opinions on where to mount them. Some say on the transom left of centre. They talk about the water coming off the transom causing water flow problems. One advantage of a setback is the gear case is positioned in better water where there is less turbulence . One would think a better location for the pick up would be off the left side of the setback where it would be in better water and the feed line shorter.

Seems to work! Here is a post:

I had a 13' Checkmate with a Force 85 that the prop shaft was at least 1.5" above the bottom putting the entire bullet of the gear case high & dry at speed. I moved it from on center this height and went from 61 to 68 MPH. Obviously this was the bulk of my resistance on this rig. The trim responded better and it handled better. I did have to increase the size of the skeg significantly as it had a tendency to want to swap ends when turning. There just wasn't enough surface area in the water to maintain track. It looked more like a rudder than a skeg when I was done with it.

I am glad Dave Elsey doesn't go on this site very much. He would re-engineer that water pick up to fit in the top portion of the nitro case behind the trim tab so that only the very tip of that water tube appeared. It would function the same, but be almost invisible.

THEN Kevin will make a one piece replacement trim tab with the water tube built in. It will have a tube from it to the water pump.
Perfect solution and motor looks stock.
