1976 Mercury Racing Brochure

Cable Steering Systems

Cable Steering assembly, complete
Its on the far right above the boat picture.
The assembly is a self containing frame with the steering shaft, steering drum, wheel, pulleys cable, foot throttle plate and rest foot plate.
Total self supporting piece bolted to the floor. GREAT of open style V hulls like the Delta and VooDoo. Since it was not attached to the boat's dash, you could move it back further toward the stern for better balance. Some racers ran the throttle cable and electric cable out the front of the assembly and under the floor to the back of the boat. The front pulleys were mounted thru the hull and the cable ran up thru the deck or just inside the deck near the back of the boat. This resulted in a very clean boat interior with no cables. Plus if you flipped the boat and ruined the deck it did not hurt any of your control pieces so the repair was much faster.

To-day you could make a better lighter frame assembly with plastic tube and carbon fiber.

This link reminded me of the MOON gas pedals some racers used.

You could get the pedal with a centre mount like these.

Most motors use a PULL on the cable to advance the throttle.
They would mount the cable & spring to the heel of the pedal.
These pedals had a nice feel to them and you could push down on the heel should the throttle stick. You did not need to totally depend on the return spring as with the Hot Foot type. Plus you could get a matching pedal for the other foot.
