Since 1984 I have always enjoyed running the YAMAHA 30 hp short shaft tiller motors.......They fit and the trunk, are light weight and a very good performance wise.
Only problem now is they are very costly!

NOW WITH THE SUCCESS OF THE OMC IN T750 .....THERE IS A NEW PLAYER.....A TILLER 2 CYLINDER OMC SHORT SHAFT!
Problem is you need to find the tiller part and there are many pieces to that assembly and they were on the commercial models

Ive always wanted to put a "big" horsepower tiller on a short jon boat. Jacked up high. It would be cool to run in shallow water

I put a short shaft 60 OMC on a 1448 MV 20" transom last year. My issues was that I didn't want to give up the shifting in gear while the motor was running, so didn't get to try all the solid hub props I had. I ended up getting an OMC SST2 in 21". I added more cup but still slipped on taking off. I did get 48 MPH with it.
I now have a pro 50 long shaft on it now with trim. Can't tell you how fast cause haven't finished it yet. Too many projects on the go. Just picked up a super charged Mazda MX 5 two weeks ago and all it needed was a front bumper, a fender, a door skin and quarter panel lol. Projects keeps coming my way for some reasons

Here is a tiller long shaft parts motor.....it has all the original OMC tiller parts. You could make a good short shaft and have extra parts combining the 2 motors.

Mercury did make smaller pitch choppers for the inline six motors...18, 20,22 pitch. They are not costly and you can change the hub for the OMC and resize the prop diameter. They work well. Another option is to put the 186 gears from the triple in the lower unit. Then you can run smaller pitch and diameter props which eliminates most of the torque on the steering.

I have mentioned this before on other threads:
MANY PARTS FROM THE 30 TRIPLE AND THE 40-50 TRIPLE ARE INTERCHANGEABLE!
You can build a better motor in my view than yamaha ever built by mixing parts from these two motors.
- the early single ram power trim clamp bracket assemble and the Pro 50 bolt right on a 30 triple....so you can now have factory power trim on the 30.
- you can switch lower units!.....a 30 mid and lower unit is longer than the 40-50....because of the higher gear ratio, a 30 lower unit on the 40-50 really improves the performance especially with a load or towing.....plus it trolls slower for fishing.....30 hp extra length on a short shaft works perfect on 20 inch V hull...its over 17 inches
- on a light JON boat a 30 yamaha short with 50 hp carbs, plastic reeds and a 40-50 lower unit work. The mid is shorter with the 40-50 lower unit so you don't need to jack the motor as high and you can run all the mercury props because of the common spline...lots of prop selection!
- many loved the 35 cubic inch mod 30 yamaha motors.....they are costly to build because of the special parts and there is a better option. A MOD 50 POWERHEAD WITH A 30 LOWER UNIT! In the last few years hydroplane racers have built very strong mod 50 yamaha.... 8000 rpm motors..
Put one of those on a 40-50 hp fifteen inch mid with a nose coned 30 hp lower unit and a Ron Hill 22 pitch prop and you have a super strong motor that will LAST!

Here is a picture of a MOD C yamaha gear case.
The bullet of case is much smaller than the 40-50 and works well with a nose cone.
Notice the larger space above the plate....that is why it is longer.
Also notice they increased the skeg size to improve turning

Matt sent me a message about the gear ratio of the 30 yamaha triple being the same as the 40-50 triple:
Gear ratio:
1.85 (24/13)
This differs from the performance running the same chopper prop on the same Delta first with a 30 and then the 50.
The 30 ran 46 mph at 6100
The 50 ran 54 mph at 6100........same 51 to 53 mph as the 50 runs on the VooDoos.
Common sense told me same rpm, same prop, 8 mph faster....the gear ratio has to be different.
Learn something new to-day.....now I will need to check further.

IF?? by chance you are thinking of of running a 30 yamaha and later going to a 50 yamaha......some planning ahead will reduce the number of holes in your transom. NON power trim 30, 40 and 50 yamahas share the same clamp bracket. Knowing that the 30 requires more transom height than the 40-50 don't use the top clamp bracket bolt hole for the 30. You will need a lower transom height for the 50 and you will need that top bolt hole.
The motors also share the same 7 pin electrics plug.
