It’s great for T850 to have another make and model boat racing in the class and being competitive! The last time a Checkmate was Racing was early to mid 1970’s. The Delta came out in 1975 and that hull made the Checkmate no longer competitive. The Gordon Team has a boat in each of the three speed categories that we have seen in the class since the class made its Canadian debut in 2010. Their white delta is running in the 67 to 71 mph group. From 2010 to 2013 that’s where the class as at. That’s when we had Yamaha 70CES and Mercury 59 cubic inch 60 hp competitive and we had 15 to 17 entries.
The yellow Checkmate MX13 fits in the next group. That’s the 72 to 74 mph group. That group started in 2014 and ended in 2017.
From 2018 to 2022 there was no T850 class.
In 2022 T850 class returned.and we are seeing the next level 75 to 79 mph. There are two boats Jesse Coulter and Chris Gordon that have video for their boats performing that that level.
I doesn’t require a lot of work to get a T850 to perform at the first level, but it is increasing more difficult to get to the higher levels. Top T850 racers will tell you its not one thing that makes for a Top contender. It’s the combination on a number of small improvements that gradually increase the performance bit by bit. It’s also the reason why those boats sell for bigger money. Most people would sooner buy a top boat rather than develop one.
