I got a couple of people asking about how the 49 OMC big gearcase motors performed in T Class here in Ontario, I am guessing they had read about APBA VP75 class which only allows 49 OMC long shaft motors. That class is part of the Twin City Race Club program and has a solid following.
In past years the big gearcase motors were not successful in T class because they Raced in T850 class which is a plus 70 mph class. We did test two 49 big foots in T750 to see how they matched up ...one was a long shaft on a 13 ft checkmate and the other was a short shaft on a critchfield.....both were competitive. The twin carb 49 mercury, the 49 twin Suzuki and 49 twin Yamaha and or Mariner all have small gearcases and are legal in T750.
At the time the 49 big foot was tested the discussions ended with that motor not being allowed in T750 because it likely would be superior to the other T750 engines with a lighter driver even if the minimum weight for those motors was increased to 725 lb.
Today the bad news is there are no T750 boats currently Registered for the Tweed race. Only T850 so far and if? A T750 does race it will be part of T850. Good news is it opens the door for people with big foot motors to come out. Get the boat count up higher and the class can be split into two heats with the slower boats in the same heat.

If your looking to find a 15 inch triple OMC midsection with a large 4 spline gearcase. Tim Topping has one in stock. Our testing showed 58 to 60 mph on a critchfield with a plus 210 lb driver.. excellent combo to gain experience driving.

I was reminded that there are a few T guys with long shaft 70 hp Yamahas and a few long shaft 52 & 59 cubic inch Mercurys. They too all run in the 55 mph range and would all be competitive with one another. Remember you can sign up to race just for the weekend.

This would be the preferred model. It’s a mechanical shift . The later model big foot gearcase is more efficient and the drive shaft from this model I understand fits the later model. And yes you can change the powerhead and baseplate to run a 4 spline 56.

At the tweed race this weekend there will be an OMC 15 inch big foot racing in T850. The powerhead is a 56 cubic inch and the boat is a delta. The boat is the one restored by the Gordon family on 6 mile and it has the “NEW” deck on it. There have been other people interested in purchasing a new deck to restore their delta so it’s nice to see one completed. The top T750 boat is Jesse Coulters OMC/critchfield. I believe Jesse is racing their T850 critchfield at tweed so we won’t see how the Gordon big foot would compare to the top T750 at this race.

APBA in the United States has a Hobby Class similar to T Class . It’s a very low cost fun class that runs the 49 cubic inch OMC big foot motors.
Here are the rules for Hobby Class
https://www.tcpba.org/classes/hobby-stock

Racers up here would likely want more outboard selections that included mercury and Yamaha.
This could be a class within T Class
